After School Club Directory

Boys Once-A-Month Reading Club

Are you interested in traveling on wild adventures, searching for clues, and solving mysteries? Then the Boys' Book Club is the place for you! Once a month we will meet for lively discussions of adventure, historical fiction, and mystery novels. If you have been wondering what it would be like to survive in the wilderness, help save an endangered species, or solve a whodunit mystery, then join us as we talk about the following books:

Cheerleading

Rah! Rah! It’s the ever-popular cheerleading club!! This class is for anyone who has every wanted to try cheerleading. You will learn the basics of cheerleading including motions, jumps, dances, stunts and cheers! We will also tackle some new and exciting cheers that are great for the athlete that is looking for a challenge! You will learn safe and proper technique when turning or doing a jump! Taught by CCES’s very own cheerleading pros, Ms. Mannino and Ms. Waldron, this class will have you stand up and cheer, literally, of course! Wear tennis shoes, a t-shirt, shorts, and a smile to the first practice!

Chess Club

Whether you’re a beginner learning the basics of chess or an experienced player wanting to improve strategy, this class will help you hone your skills. A portion of each class is devoted to instruction and a portion to play (students are matched with those of similar ability).Plus, during the last several sessions, students will participate in a chess tournament. US Chess Federation master and 1993 Maryland State champion, David Sherman, has 15 years of chess teaching experience and has taught similar classes at other Montgomery County schools, including CCES.

Community Service Club

The Community Service Club continues its tradition of Kids Helping Kids. Club members will meet monthly throughout the school year to design and work on projects that benefit local, national and international charitable organizations and disaster relief efforts including area hospitals and treatment centers, homeless shelters, community outreach centers and medical research for diseases affecting children. In addition, participants will organize school-wide activities such as collecting winter coats, nonperishable food, and gifts for children in need and funds for a variety of charities that they choose and research. In creating their own list of causes and working on them from start to finish, the club members serve as CCES's good-will ambassadors to our community, the nation and the world.

Cribbage Club: A New Take on an Old Game

The “Crib” is not just a place to put sleeping babies! Come learn how to play the very special card game, cribbage, with our own resident expert, third-grade teacher, Mrs. Jacobi. You will be sure to make new friends, improve your math skills, and have fun all at the same time. Bring a healthy snack, a deck of cards and a cribbage board if you own one.

Digital Photography and More

Learn how to take better pictures! Then, LEARN how to take good photos and make them GREAT by using Photoshop editing software. This class is for the student who loves taking pictures but also loves to work with the computer. You will learn about good compositions in pictures, the basics of how light affects your pictures and then how to manipulate your shots using Adobe Photoshop™.

(This class is open to 4th, 5th and 6th graders only.)

(Note as to cameras: Your own digital camera is not necessary but if you bring your own camera, it will allow you to take more pictures throughout the course.)

Fencing

Thrust and parry! Practice your skill or learn the basics of fencing from the DC Fencers Club, one of Washington’s best-known fencing clubs. Participants must wear long pants and soft-soled athletic shoes. Both new and continuing students are welcome.

Interested in training to run a 5k and meeting new friends along the way?

Hip-Hop: Dancing To The Beat!

Join Joesar Alva from the DC Artist Collective and learn the hippest dance around, hip-hop! Learn routines and dance moves that are unique to hip-hop. Discover the cat move and the boom. Learn about the origins of hip-hop and how musical responses differ with a soft or hard beat and have fun!

Homework Club

Is homework getting you down? Are you wearing your pencil's eraser down to the nub? Are there math or science problems that are making you cross-eyed? The CCES teachers want to help. If you have at least 60 minutes of homework or studying to do and you may need help in a subject or just a quiet place to concentrate, any and all CCES students are invited to come to the Homework Club. There is only one rule: all students must come prepared to work for the full hour. Activity Bus provided.

All Homework Club dates are tied to the availability of the after-school Activity Bus. Always check for up-dates and changes.

Sports Club - For 5th and 6th Graders

This sports club will feature such indoor activities as dodge ball, indoor soccer, crab soccer, steal the flag and speedball. We are looking for kids who like sports and games and want to have fun in a non-competitive environment. All skill levels are very welcome.

Spring Play: Peter Pan (Cast)

The 2008 CCES Spring play is sure to be a high-flying spectacular! For dedicated students in grades 4-6, this is your chance to join the cast to help re-create the classic, heart-warming tale of Peter Pan. This is not the musical but a script based upon the original book by J.M Barrie. Lost boys, pirates and Indians wanted! Try-outs will be Thursday, December 13. The rehearsals will begin in January and will meet on the dates below. Note: There will also be two rehearsals on the two Tuesdays prior to the performance date on April 24. To join up, every actor and his or her parent must read, review and sign a contract that spells out your commitment. Spring Play: Peter Pan (Stage Crew)

Join the stage crew of the 2008 CCES Spring play and make the play come alive through your stagecraft. Help design and create sets and costumes and even special effects. Learn about lighting and sound. Put your talents and imaginations to work!

Tae Kwon Do

Flying Kick Fitness Center, a traditional Tae Kwon Do and Martial Arts School, is continuing to offer classes in Tae Kwon Do at CCES. Flying Kick has over 16 years of experience teaching children and adults at its own facility and at many schools in our area. Both new and continuing students are welcome. (Please note: This class meets for 13 seesions; No activity bus is provided.)

Trading Card Games

Back by popular demand! Trading card games for all that are interested! Do you love trading-card games like Yu-Gi-Oh!, PokÈmon, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Naruto, Duel Masters, Dragonball Z, etc.? Whether you are a beginner or consider yourself a pro, this is the club for you. Come hone your skills, teach others the game, or just have fun while learning a brand-new game. Bring your cards, and let's play!

Yearbook Club

(FILLED)

Are you creative, responsible, and willing to work cooperatively with other students? If you answered, “YES,” then Yearbook Club is for you! We are looking for a small group of students to write and create our Chevy Chase Yearbook. As a group, the club will need to choose a theme, make decisions about what to include in the yearbook, begin designing pages, and take lots of pictures!
